As we head into yet another week here in WI where high temps are represented by single digits, I once again am questioning why I live here. Of course, we would most likely be in the Pacific Northwest if not here, and dealing with insane flooding, so take your pick. It does make me realize that WI winters do have a certain charm, especially if you are a polar bear or an Eskimo. I am unfortunately neither, and I tend to lean much more heavily toward the reptilian end of the spectrum, and will always choose sunshine and a warm rock over the cold.
I realized yesterday, as I did 12 miles on the treadmill while watching the winter X-Games (and almost fell off twice as I winced at much younger and braver men than I did 100’ back flips while riding 450 lb. snowmobiles), that I have yet to run outside in ’09. ‘Inside in ’09’ is my new mantra, which will hopefully be short-lived, although there is nothing too terribly wrong with it at this time of year.
I’ve upped my FTP to 297 watts, which is slightly up from where I was 3 weeks ago, and my 1,000 yard TT in the pool is marginally less pathetic (14:00) than where I was 2 weeks ago, so I suppose I am heading in the right direction. I’m in no real hurry, as racing season for us Midwesterners doesn’t kick off for another 5 months anyways. Good thing, too, because I am still 6 lbs. heavier than I was at this time last year. Better for keeping me warm is the best excuse I can come up with, and it seems to be working because I am still freely reaching for cookies instead of healthier alternatives.
We’ll do another 1,000 TT this Friday, and then I’ll spend the weekend with Oliver sliding wooden snakes across a frozen pond, otherwise know as Y-Guides. Then back to business next week…
